Year 10 and 11 transition support

Students looking to leave school after achieving their Record of School Achievement (RoSA) must enter full-time work, TAFE, or an apprenticeship. These students may be nominated to receive Transition Advisor assistance to plan their transition from school. They will work in the context of a school Career and Transition Team that is responsible for the overall coordination, delivery, and facilitation of career and transition support, including connecting young people beyond school.

Year 10 subject selection process

Subject Selection Fair

Students are involved in a number of subject workshops where they can learn more about the courses offered to study in Years 11 and 12, career pathways in different fields and have an opportunity to ask questions to experienced staff. This full-day program allows students to be immersed in making decisions about their future.

Subject Selection Information Evening

The purpose of the Subject Selection Information Evening is to provide information to assist students and their families in their selection of senior courses for Years 11 and 12. Faculty Head Teachers and our Head Teacher Careers and Senior Pathways and Transition Team will be available for you to ask questions and seek advice regarding students' subjects and future choices.

Senior School Interview Day

At some time in the near future, students will need to attend an interview outside of school, be it for a part-time job, for entry into university or TAFE, for a full-time job, work experience, or apprenticeship. These are formal situations, and people often do not perform at their best because they are nervous and inexperienced.

St Johns Park High School has organised a program that allows our students to maximise their success in interviews, give them an advantage in a competitive world and match their subject choices to their future career.

Each student will attend an interview to discuss their intention. The interview will provide students with an opportunity to clarify their goals and to discuss on an individual basis their subject selection.

Careers student learning hub

The Careers Student Learning Hub contains resources for all students to access during breaks. It contains brochures and pamphlets form all major universities, TAFEs, and colleges in Sydney and beyond. Students are welcome to use laptops for independent research for post-school planning.

Other transition programs

Transition Program

Our Transition Advisors work closely with the Head Teacher Careers and Senior Pathways to support students in planning their transition from school.

The Career and Transition Team is responsible for the overall coordination, delivery, and facilitation of career and transition support for students. This includes connecting young people with quality career and transition provision beyond school. At St Johns Park High School, there are two Transition Advisors who aim to:

  • Develop good connections with students in order o provide consultation, tuition, mentoring, and advocacy
  • Support students to be actively engaged in their learning
  • Create and strengthen new and existing partnerships between the school, industry, and outside agencies
  • Promote effective communication strategies between the school, employers, and the local community
  • Be a true and consistent source of support for students to overcome adversity
  • Seek local solutions through specialised community support for students
  • Translate personal learning plans into plans of action

In collaboration with the student, family, and any other stakeholders, a personalised program of career and transition support is developed and delivered individually by a Transition Advisor.

Youth Enrichment Program (YEP)

The Youth Enrichment Program (YEP) is an educational program delivered by The Parks Community Network Inc. to Year 10 students identified by the Careers and Transition Team. Students enrolled in YEP are withdrawn from regular classes for one day each week during the school term.

The aim of the program is to improve student attainment and post-school learning, provide employment pathways and address the social and behavioural needs of the individual. YEP is an innovative, creative, highly interactive, educational program that enhances learning and training outcomes. Each student receives individually tailored support during the program, as well as after they have finished the program. Activities are designed to assist young people in developing resilience, lifelong skills, and a connection with their local community. Through participation in the program, students enhance their ability for independence to reach peak in academic, social, and personal excellence.
